So How Do HVLS Fans Work to Cool Your Workers Off?

HVLS fans are becoming increasingly popular in commercial, agricultural and industrial settings. These fans keep the facilities cooler in the extreme of summer heats, improving indoor air quality and providing a comfortable work environment for the workers.

But how do HVLS fans actually work?

How HVLS fans work
HVLS fans work the same way as traditional ceiling fans. They have blades that rotate to push the surrounding air downwards. The resulting air current moves across the contained space, activating the body’s natural cooling mechanism by facilitating evaporation of sweat from the skin surface. Consequently, the individual feels cooler, refreshed and relaxed.

It’s worth mentioning, though, that the evaporative cooling effect produced by HVLS fans is much more pronounced than that produced by traditional high velocity speed fans.

The reason?

The massive size of the blades that are found on HVLS fans!

Compared to traditional ceiling fans, the blades on HVLS fans are designed to be much larger in size; the blades of a typical HVLS fan range from 6 to 24 feet in length.

What this does is that, when an HVLS fan rotates, it displaces larger volume of air compared to a conventional ceiling fan, pushing lots of air to the ground. When the air hits the ground, it moves out horizontally; it has to, because it has got more air behind it. This creates a stronger (yet gentle) current of air which is responsible for the more pronounced evaporative cooling effect.

What’s really surprising in all this is the factthat an HVLS fan accomplishes superior cooling at much lesser energy compared to a traditional ceiling fan.

Yes, HVLS fans are far more energy efficient than traditional high velocity fans; their blades rotate much slower. However, because of the larger air displacement involved, the slower velocity of the blades of these fans never becomes their operational limitation. In fact, it only makes these fans less noisy, which can be considered an added benefit for industrial and commercial facilities, where noisier work environments are avoided for better.

How Do They Work?

HVLS fans work in quite a simple manner. Their long lightweight blades gently push large amounts of air downwards, where it travels along horizontally along the floor.
